School Based Apprenticeships in the Sign and Graphics Industry
28-Mar-2014
Training for a career in the Sign and Graphics Industry can start at school. School Based Apprentices complete the first year of their apprenticeship during their senior high school years and commence full-time work as a 2nd year apprentice after their HSC.
School-based apprenticeships involve:
- A training contract between employer and apprentice, like other apprenticeships
- A minimum of 144 paid working days during Years 11 and 12
- Formal training with a registered training organisation
- The work and study then contribute to meeting the student’s HSC requirements
Employer responsibilities include:
- A commitment to employ and train the apprentice on a part-time basis while they undertake their HSC, and then full-time after they leave school until they complete their trade
- Payment of the minimum hourly wage for a first year apprentice for the days worked while the student is at school
- Providing on-the-job training and giving the apprentice duties that help them develop trade-level skills
