Visual Connections Australia

New magazine dedicated to local traditional signwriting launching 1st March

Taking pre-orders for first edition of Jumbo Magazine now

Jumbo Magazine aims to capture in print the stories of the tradition of hand-painted signage from across Australia and New Zealand – both the history of the much-loved industry as well as its present-day form, pushing past boundaries that seemed it may have never recovered from.

The magazine champions the people behind the signs, from those who grew up practising the trade in its heyday, to those who continue to nurture it through their work today.

The first edition features interviews with:

Chris Dobell of Dobell Signs, formally of Wollongong, NSW. Phillip Constantine of Constantine Signs, Falls Creek, NSW.

Gaston Castagnet of Doomsday Signs, Melbourne VIC.

And more!

Editor Ryan Donnelly says, “I chose the name ‘Jumbo’ as a sly nod to the local signwriting community, as it was one of a few slang words in Australia that referred to one’s quickstyle (a practised lettering style unique to each signwriter, internationally it is commonly known as a casual style).

I like that we can easily make connections within the Aussie and Kiwi community through social media, but I really wanted to capture the interesting people I’ve connected with; in a tangible way. Traditionally flicking through pages and seeing large photos of signs is a nice juxtapose to that on a phone screen, for a better reading and viewing experience.”
