Provocative, Sensual, Unique – Under Her Skin #7 Pozitive and swissQprint bring colour, depth, and texture to signature works of Edmond Thommen

Under Her Skin #7 is an exciting and alluring exhibition by Swiss–Australian photographic artist Edmond Thommen, who uses digital elements and imagery to blend and refine his work.

“Photographic art has always been more than the image; it is a blending of a visual moment with the movement of the soul, the conveyance of emotion, and the gentle awakening of the intent of the artist,” Edmond says.

His Under Her Skin collections use the female figure as the basis of his art. Ethereal in style, the use of imagery and digital elements may soften or highlight the body’s outline by blending it into several layers of images that he superimposes on the figure. Sometimes, the figure seems to disappear behind a barrage of organic materials or man-made structures – until the viewer’s eyes start to actively search for the lines that, in his or her mind, “must be there” behind the imagery.

His work is “layered” and is visually and intellectually demanding on the viewer to find the form. In doing so, viewers delve beyond the surface. Indeed, Edmond’s photographic art encourages us to look – and if we look properly, to see.

The exhibition – held at M2 Gallery, Surry Hills, Sydney – features 30 pieces, 16 of which are heavily influenced by a floral theme, whether real or artificial.

“I used my large library of generic art model poses to create the images I’m showing at the exhibition by blending them with the flower theme, many of which were taken at Floriade in Canberra over the past two years,” says Edmond. “The poses fit the textured backgrounds of my works. All final works on display – as with every other exhibition of mine – are original and unique pieces of photographic art (1 of 1). All work is always best viewed on site, of course.”

To truly realise the colours, depth, and texture of the works, Edmond partnered with Pozitive signs & graphic supplies and the exceptional print capabilities of the swissQprint Nyala 5.

“We are really proud to be involved with this exhibition and the works that Edmond has created,” said Phil Trumble, Managing Director, Pozitive signs & graphic supplies. “We printed six of the works using the swissQprint Nyala 5. Recreating what Edmond had produced was a lot of fun, but it had its challenges! Fortunately, we have a swissQprint. Reaching the colours and fidelity or quality that Edmond can see in his mind when creating these artworks is a big task. We wanted to ensure we did the artist proud and delivered what he had envisioned. However, we were able to get excellent results thanks to the print quality and colour gamut of the swissQprint. Some of the images have over 20 layers of print with different effects, including white and varnish inks, to create different levels of texture and tactile content.”

The images are 600mm x 900mm and printed on white aluminium composite, mirror gold aluminium composite, and clear acrylic.

“The effects achieved by the Pozitive team are amazing and show the latest applications of printing techniques such as printing on mirror gold aluminium composite and matt (highly textured) and gloss acrylic,” said Edmond.

“Many visitors at the opening were convinced they were looking at paintings or non-printing applications. But when I explained the process and showed them what Pozitive is capable of, they were finally convinced – with one of the unique pieces of Pozitive work selling on the night. The aluminium composite mirror gold received amazing attention – the 3D effect Pozitive achieved on this material is astounding.”

Edmond captures the imagery with his Canon EOS Mark III. Sometimes, for the textured backgrounds, he will even use an iPhone.

“Usually, the textured background decides what pose I use to fit that background,” says Edmond. “When the two come together to fit my creative vision, I will have achieved what I’m looking for in the end result.”

With the exhibition Under Her Skin #7 – Blended, Thommen shows he is a virtuoso at bringing together colour and the human form through the use of digital techniques and photography. The works engage the viewer as they slowly unwrap the different layers to discover subtle forms and compositions hidden one beneath another. With the help of Pozitive signs & graphic supplies and swissQprint, those intriguing veils are brought to life, realising the artist’s vision of works that are intriguing, sensual, fascinating, and truly unique.
